Montenegro rewards a car. The coast road is a joy, the mountain roads more so, and half the best places to eat are somewhere a bus will never take you. Hiring here is straightforward once you know what to watch for.

A few things worth knowing before you book

Most companies want the main driver to be twenty-five or over, and add a young-driver surcharge below that. A licence issued outside the EU or UK usually needs an International Driving Permit alongside it, which is far easier to arrange at home than at a hire desk. And if you are planning to drive into Albania, Bosnia or Croatia, say so up front — some companies charge a cross-border fee and a few will not allow it at all.

Automatics book out early

There are far fewer automatics here than in the UK, and in July and August they go weeks in advance. If you cannot drive a manual, get your dates to me as early as you can.

1 Your Details

Hire companies ask where your licence was issued, so this helps us quote correctly.

2 The Hire

Approximate dates and times are fine — we can firm everything up once you have chosen a car.

Most people collect at Tivat or Podgorica airport, but delivery to your hotel or apartment can usually be arranged.

Leaving the car somewhere other than where you collected it is often possible, although some companies add a one-way fee.

3 The Car

Tick anything that would suit you. The more flexible you can be, the better the price we can usually find.

Child seats are fitted by law in Montenegro and are booked by age, so we need to reserve the right ones in advance.

4 The Driver

Hire companies price by age band. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge, and a few companies will not hire to drivers over 70, so this genuinely changes the quote.

Most companies ask for at least one to two years of driving experience.

Licences from outside the EU or UK often need an International Driving Permit alongside them, and it is far easier to arrange one at home than at the hire desk.

5 Extras

Tick anything you would like us to include in the quote.

Please do tell us now rather than at the desk. Many Montenegrin hire companies charge a cross-border fee for taking a car into Albania, Bosnia or Croatia, and a few refuse permission altogether.

6 Anything Else?

Anything at all that would help us find the right car for you.

The Right Car

From a small runaround to a seven-seater or a 4x4 for the mountain roads.

Airport Or Hotel

Collect at Tivat or Podgorica, or have it brought to where you are staying.

Child Seats

Booked in advance by age, so there is one waiting rather than a scramble.
