Located in the heart of the Bay of Kotor, Our Lady of the Rocks is a man-made island with a rich history and a fascinating story that dates back centuries.

The legend

Sailors from Perast found an icon of the Madonna on a rock after a storm. In gratitude for her protection they started a tradition: every time they returned safely from a voyage, they would throw a rock into the sea. Over the centuries, the rocks formed an island — a symbol of faith, love and unity.

Inside the church you will find 68 embroidered tapestries made by local women in the 17th century, one of them worked in the maker’s own hair over twenty-five years as she waited for her husband to return from sea.
